O’s Notes: Episodes is the latest fusion, rock splash from the Canadian based progressive rock band Karcius. What makes their music sizzle is the way they compose their music. Each tune has a story behind it with an introduction, a body that is usually composed of several distinct passages and a conclusion. This is much more than the combination of screaming guitar and drums that some prog bands tout as music. They open with “ƒlément”, a three-part passage well described by the titles: “Submersion”, the funky “Sol” and more explosive “Combustion”. “Incident” is our favorite of this album with the Spanish guitar and strings. It is loaded with energy and concludes with a peaceful piano passage that connects nicely to the intro of “Levant”, a more relaxed encounter. There is a bit of grunge on “Purple King” before they wrap up another winner with the reggae blues of “Racines”.
