O’s Notes: This is the debut recording for the New York based 30-year old saxophonist Matt Garrison. He is up to the challenge as a composer and a leader. The lineup is stacked with talent including Michael Dease (tb), Claudio Rofiti (t), Mark Whitfield (g) and Don Braden (fl). The music is mellow with rich brass blends across all nine tracks. Matt wrote seven with a nice cover of “Without You-No Me” and “You Know I Love You” by Dease. We also liked “Convergence”, a syncopated piece that piled the band together in harmony. Matt is on the right track with Familiar places pulling on tradition and pressing forward with his own voice.
