O’s Notes: Jeff Watts is one of the most sought after jazz drummers anchoring the rhythm section for many top artists as well as holding a lengthy stint on the Jay Leno Show. Family is a true drummers showcase with Watts displaying his talents. However there are many other notable performances: Steve Wilson (sax) soothes us on “A Wreath For John T. Smith”, pianist David Kikosaki unwinds on “Torch E-Ternal” and bassist James Genus anchors the beat throughout the set. Watts composed all nine tracks and is impressive with complex tunes like “Of August Moon” moving through rapid changes in tempo. Family presents “Tain” as solid musician on all fronts.
