O’s Notes: Venezuelan drummer Jose R. Duque forms a quartet with Dan Shure (p), Nate Therrien (b) and Phil Sargent (g). They play nine originals with a heavy Caribbean base including three that were recorded live at The Press Room in New Hampshire during 2006. Nate plays with a calypso feel and Duque’s beats reinforce that groove. Among the best tunes are “One Year Later” with Sargent and Shure splitting the melodies and “El Gato Enmo”, both with a fusion bent. We also liked “Danilo” which was recorded both live and in the studio. Both versions swing though we preferred the live one.
