O’s Notes: The Monoblue Quartet is Tony Coe (sax, cl), Martin Stewert (g), Peter Herbert (b) and leader Franz Koglmann on trumpet. Wolfgang Reisinger is a guest artist on drums. The liner notes describe the music as “…cool jazz as a joke without a punch line…” We hear it as a good joke that needs no punch line. It’s contemporary free jazz that allows full but clearly articulated expression. Fear Death By Water contains passages that are dynamic and thought provoking, much like the music that accompanies a stage show.
