O’s Notes: Veteran jazz vocalist Mary Stallings continues to evolve on Feelin’ Good, her latest recording and the first on High Note. She assembles a fine unit with arranger, pianist Bruce Barth, Steve Nelson (vibes), Kenny Washington (d) and Peter Washington (b). Freddie Hendrix (t) and Ray Mantilla (perc) put the zip into “Night In Tunisia” one of eleven refreshed classics. The music is both a reflection of Stallings’ past and a tribute to her mentors Dizzy, Cal Tjader, Eckstine and Basie. Mary’s style is cool and relaxed, simple yet sophisticated resulting in a performance that is easily embraceable, enjoyable and worth repeating.
