O’s Notes: There are few flutists on the jazz circuit with most performing classical music. That is where Christian developed his fundamentals through his teenage years in Germany and Austria. He was quite accomplished performing both in orchestras and as a soloist but eventually developed an appetite for improvisation and blurring the lines a bit. He studied at Berklee before releasing his debut as a leader. Fields of Pannonia is a collection of ten peaceful originals all composed by Artmann except for “August” written by pianist Greg Kallor. Johannes Weidenmueller plays bass and Jeff Hirshfield keeps time in this rather relaxing session with the exceptions of “Vortex” with its atypical meter and layered complexities and the bluesy, bop-infused “Fum-Fo-Fi”. Either way this is a satisfying record.
