O’s Notes: Drummer, composer and producer Rudy Royston assembles a quintet for“Flatbed Buggy. John Ellis (b-cl, sax), Gary Versace (accordion), Hank Roberts (cello) and Jon Martin (b) join him to perform a dozen original songs. The CD artwork is a strong clue of the music inside with the statue of Charlie Chaplain and the old wooden buggy. Versace’s accordion gives the title track a bit of a retro-feel. This is the prominent groove for the entire set. After the 4th track we settled in to enjoy the music, a good encounter.
