O’s Notes: Vocalist, composer and professor Johnaye Kendrick has impressed audiences and peers in all of her endeavors. She is well educated with degrees and certificates from Western Michigan University, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and Loyola University. Kendrick now resides in Seattle and teaches music at the Cornish College of the Arts.“Flying“is her second release as a leader and it is excellent, with phasing, scatting and vocals that are personalized, embraceable and noteworthy. Johnaye shines with minimal accompaniment but the support she receives from Chris Symer (b), D’Vonne Lewis (d) and Dawn Clement (p) is top notch enabling a stellar set of originals and covers.
