O’s Notes: Luis was born in Venezuela but arrived on the New York jazz scene over 10 years ago. He steadily gained experience and is now among the most respected Latin pianists in the city. This is his recording debut as a leader and he displays a penchant for writing as well as playing the piano. The selections are varied in style and tempo. It is a blend of neo-bop and fusion accented with hints of Latin jazz. We particularly liked “The Stranger”, the racy “Breakdown” with Miguel Zenon (as), and “Spirit Song” featuring Ravi Coltrane on soprano sax.
