O’s Notes: Guitarist Sheryl Bailey leads a quartet with Jim Ridl (p), Gary Wang (b) and Shingo Oludaira (d) for her latest release. This is in contrast with her last outing fronting a big band. She wrote eight songs, mostly dedications inspired by friends. They swing on “Masa’s Bag” with everybody enjoying the jam. We also enjoyed Ridl’s work on “29-11” where Bailey plays a warm rhythm guitar as well as sharing the lead line. Sheryl plays with tremendous confidence throughout the set displaying effortless dexterity with great prowess. They strike a groove that is relaxes, balanced and enjoyable.
