O’s Notes: This is a really swinging large ensemble led by Fred who composed all of the music. He has a wide range of styles and his compositions are very engaging. They change meters, tone and color using all of the musicians to state the case. The pace picks up on “Floatation Device” with Brad Turner lighting it up on trumpet. “Oddly Enough” has a cool bounce to it. The core of the session is “Machina”, an adventurous piece divided into four movements. We like Stride’s work because he ventures into new jazz space with his big band. This is so much more refreshing that just rearranging standards!
