O’s Notes: Bassist Gregg August has composed a dynamic set of eight modern jazz selections that have sizzle, pop and pizzazz! His choice of musicians helps take us into the zone. Half of the songs are performed in a quartet, the other half as a sextet. Louis Perdomo plays piano in both configurations with August. Sam Newsome (ss) and E.J. Strickland (d) form the rest of the foursome and John Bailey (t), Yosvany Terry (as), JD Allen (sax), and Rudy Royston (d) flesh out the larger ensemble. We enjoyed the music from both configurations. Energy is abounding as Gregg successfully brings tradition into the present.
