O’s Notes: Pianist Benoit Delbecq has performed in a trio for several years with bassist John Hébert and drummer Gerald Cleaver. In 2019 saxophonist Mark Turner joined the band. He actually played with Delbecq earlier (pre-trio) in the millennium. They coalesce on Gentle Ghosts, a rather cerebral effort that provokes history while examining the future. There’s a taste of hard bop on “Anamorphases” but it’s mostly free fusion. Benoit uses electronics to blend in real time dubs, a process he calls “post-radiophonic”, giving the songs added depth and dimension.
