O’s Notes: Saxophonist Bob Mintzer’s large ensemble may not be what you’d normally characterize as big band jazz. His live audience is enthusiastic, appreciative and encouraging. We were as well! Get Up! is a refreshing program of contemporary jazz laced with funky beats and powerful, sweet layers of brass. The band is never overpowering, just modulated to deliver the right stuff. There are fresh arrangements of classics like “It’s Your Thing” and “Sing A Simple Song” mated with five originals in a scintillating performance.
