O’s Notes: We are only a few seconds into the first track, Charlie Parker’s “Segment” before we realize that Ken Song can really play his guitar. He cooks with confidence rolling over the notes with a warm, fluid technique that serves well in his tribute to Montgomery. Llew Matthews (p), producer Luther Hughes (b) and Paul Kreibich (d) are a tight rhythm section behind him. Each of them uses their solo opportunities wisely to express themselves. They include a couple of ballads like “Everything Happens To Me” and really swing on “Look For The Silver Lining”. The results are what we’d call a friendly burner – cool bebop that is rounded off and palatable to a broad audience while remaining true to form.
