O’s Notes: West coast fusion pianist James Carney moved to New York in 2004. Since then, he’s been developing his vibe, which is unleashed here on Green-wood. Peter Epstein (), Ralph Alessi (t), Tony Malaby (ts), Mark Ferber (d) Chris Lightcap (b) and Josh Roseman (tb) are the mellow musicians coming together to express Carney’s work. It’s a brassy exchange that is not always at a breakneck pace. They slow down on “It’s Always Cold When You’re Leaving” featuring Carney’s creativity on the keys for over twelve syncopated minutes. Lightcap underscores the rhythm on “Willwaw” with Roseman leading the melody. Our favorites “The Poetry Wall” and the bonus track “Half The Battle”. It’s a new groove and we welcome their next attempt.
