O’s Notes: Jim steps away from the straight ahead sound of his first few albums and onto the contemporary side of jazz. By the 2nd track they are rambling with “You Better Believe It” before engaging in fusion on “Chaotica” that suggests Brecker Brothers. “Young Dan” and “Sertão” swing with Jim taking off on the melody over cool beats. Welcome to the blues courtesy of guitarist Dave Phelps on “Long Time Comin”. Yes the beats are on the contemporary side but the melodies are far from elevator music. Hey Jim, it is all right to loosen up from time to time if you can achieve this kind of groove!
