O’s Notes: Composer Don Aliquo plays tenor sax and bass clarinet. He leads two distinct quartets for Growth, his latest endeavor. The first three selections feature Aliquo with Rod McGaha (t), Johnathan Wires (b) and Marcus Finnie (d). They shine on “Woman Clothes In the Sun” and “Lower Broadway Rundown”. The last five songs match Don with Steve Kovalcheck (g), Jacob Jezioro (b) and Danny Gottlieb (d). “For the Vulnerable” and “Pedal Taverns” are the standouts here. Aliquo traverses across several straight-ahead genres with his new compositions in a provocative set.
