O’s Notes: Tyner continues to create intriguing new sounds with Guitars, collaborations with guitarists John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Derek Trucks, Marc Ribot and Bela Fleck on banjo. His core rhythm section includes the venerable Ron Carter (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d). The mode is mostly bebop with shades of fusion and blues. We particularly liked the bluesy tunes with Trucks, “500 Miles” (Ribot), “Mr. P.C.” (Scofield), “Amberjack (Fleck) and “Boubacar” (Frisell). In addition to the CD, a DVD provides a true behind the scenes look at the recording session. That includes five full selections including several of our favorites. This is the icing on the cake!
