O’s Notes: Drummer Steve Smith follows up the chart-topping Viewpoint (5/3) with another winner, Heart Of The City. His band, Vital Information remains in tact with Mark Soskin (p), Baron Browne (b), and Vinny Valentino (g). Guests Andy Fusco (sax) and George Brooks (sax) add brass on 3 and 1 selection(s) respectively. The energy is high from the opening beats of “Mr. P.C.” They don’t let up, always propelled by Steve’s intensity on the skins. Valentino’s guitar work on ”Eight +Five” makes it sizzle while Smith dials in funky beats for “Bugalulu”, just a couple of strong examples over the dozen tunes. Steve opens both takes of “City Outskirts” with evolving drum solos amplifying his prowess. This is a formidable team that we look to here from again and again!
