O’s Notes: This is a bluesy jazz-fusion that rocks. Volpe’s quartet includes polished veterans Onaje Allan Gumbs (p), bassist Bob Cranshaw and Buddy Williams (d). The program is fresh with nine originals plus a cool Latin-based cover of “Softly As in a Morning Sunrise”. Lou is predominant, leading the melodies on each track. But there is enough diversity in the grooves to maintain your interest all the way through especially on the blues riffs of “Prince Charming” where Volpe stretches out a bit. He burns on “Coltrane of Thought” a bop tune that will engage the straight-ahead crew. This is a fine set that will delight jazz guitar fans.
