O’s Notes: Vasandani is one of the exciting young vocalists on the jazz scene singing much along the lines of Jon Hendriks who lends vocal and scatting support on two songs notably the title track! Hi-Fly is his third CD on Mack Avenue supported by a solid band with Jeb Patton (p), Kendrick Scott (d), David Wong on (b), Ambrose Akinmusire (t) and John Ellis (sax). The program has a couple of originals and popular standards arranged and personalized by Sachal. Our favorites are “Babe’s Blues”, “One Mint Julep” (with Hendrick) and “There’s A Boat That’s Leaving Soon For New York” in a warm set.
