O’s Notes: Pittsburgh’s MCG Jazz All-Stars features composer Jay Ashby (tb), producer Marty Ashby (g) and a wealth of prominent jazz musicians. This edition is inspired by the work of the late Teenie Harris, a photographer for the Pittsburgh Courier a prominent African American newspaper. Teenie’s work is expansive and chronicles the Black Experience over several decades. His work has been featured in the Carnegie Museum of Art since 2001. The music is action oriented and full of emotional exchanges starting with the swinging “Teenie’s Blues” from 1940 and moving through bebop, cool jazz, hard bop and into the 1960s with “Teenie’s Blues” culminated with “A Little Sweetness” celebrating the Pittsburgh Sound that premiered at Manchester Craftsman’s Guild in 1995. These are seven classic selections executed to perfection mirroring the works of Harris and the spirit of his subjects, yet another MCG standout.
