O’s Notes: Drummer, composer and bandleader Matt Wilson has several connections to the great poet Carl Sandburg. Family ties, Swedish heritage, Knox County, IL and a passion for jazz. So Matt’s inspiration on“Honey and Salt is the poetry of Carl Sandburg. Ron Miles (cornet), Jeff Federer (reeds, voice), Dawn Thomson (g, voice) and Martin Wind (b) join Wilson’s quintet. Dawn adds vocals on several soft pop selections. Poem readers include Christian McBride, Carla Bley, John Scofield, Joe Locarno and Rufus Reid. The session is divided into 3 chapters along with an Epilogue. This was our first take on Sandburg’s poems and we found them practical, funny and inspirational, presented with the jazz accompaniment that mirrors the themes. We locked on Chapter Three.
