O’s Notes: Edom is Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz’s quartet. It includes Brian Marsella (keyboards), Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz (b) and Yuval Lion (d). They play a progressive klezmer music that is eclectic and spacey. It is right in line with the music on Tzadik, based on Jewish traditions recast in retro 1960’s pop and progressive rock. You can make more sense of this music by gaining a better understanding of Esau, the patriarch and brother of Jacob. Hope and Destruction is based on Esau, a rather complicated character! So the music includes the wide range of emotions that surround the lives of the brothers Jacob and Esau. We connected on a few, notably “Shuki” and “Slight sun”.
