O’s Notes: Seasoned saxophonist Benny Golson still has that warm, mellow tone and he puts it to work over ten classics on Horizon Ahead. Mike Ledonne (p), Buster Williams (p) and Carl Allen (d) round out a swinging quartet as they glide through a strong set of mixed tempo classics. “Lulu’s back In Town” was a great platform for WIlliams to strut his stuff. We also enjoyed Ledonne’s work on the piano on “Domingo” and Allen’s dynamic solo on “Out of the Darkness and Into the Light”. It is the beauty of the solos that make this session an enjoyable, relaxing set.
