O’s Notes: John Hicks had a 45-year career as a jazz pianist initially performing in support of great artists like Betty Carter and Art Blakey. Late in his career he emerged as a leader in his own right and performed many times as a soloist. His appreciative audiences included many of his peers who came to applaud and pick up a few tricks! This is a 2006 session captured at New Hope, PA. John plays nine classics filling the air with rich tones and harmony in a delightful way. Hicks died in May 2006 so this was surely one of his last performances. It is vibrant and spirited, an excellent memory of the man and his legacy. It serves as an excellent companion on Sunday afternoon.
