O’s Notes: In Common is a creative jazz-fusion quintet led by Walter Smith III (sax) and Matthew Stevens (g). In their third release III, they invite Kris Davis (p), Dave Holland (b) and Terri Lynn Carrington (d) to join them. This is a formidable team that lives up to their potential as each musician is encouraged to bring their creative soul to life. There is heavy improvisation that engages the listener. Occasional use of electronics is a new addition to this band, pushing the envelope a tad further. “Reds”, “Prince July”, “Shine” and “Orange Crush” are highlights.
