O’s Notes: Joani puts her unique spin on fourteen covers. She sounds good on “The Secret” and great on her transformation of “You Are My Sunshine”. She gets strong accompaniment from Miles Foxx Hill (b) and Bob Murphy (p) here and also on “Thank You For Loving Me” with Brad Turner (t). The band cooks with Ross Taggart (sax) and Murphy on the B3 on several tracks including a snazzy arrangement of “Take 5” with rap by Jay Kin. We also liked Taylor scatting on “Lucky In Love” and on “Peace Lullaby” again with shadowing from Taggart on sax. Joani is at her best when she matches her range to the music. We loved her rockin’ on “Compared To What” then soothing on “Jim’s Lament”. The set got better with each track, much like a live performance!
