O’s Notes: This is another of Gerald Wilson’s popping orchestras. It is especially potent because of the prowess of the individual musicians including Jon Faddis (t), Sean Jones (t), Ron Blake (ts), Steve Wilson (as), Russell Malone (g), Lewis Nash (d), Peter Washington (b) and Renee Rosnes (p). Wilson does a great job bringing them together as a unit playing his arrangements of his tunes plus two covers. They open with “Sax Chase”, which as suggested contains several high intensity sax solos. The pace varies but the intensity is constant. All of the selections engaged us and at 87 years old, Gerald continues to bring fresh music to the jazz scene.
