O’s Notes: Canadian trumpeter, vocalist Bria Skonberg is back with Indigo, a recording tilted towards more accessibility, while retaining strong jazz roots. Her core band is arranger Gil Goldstein (p, acc), Eric Wheeler (b), and Darrian Douglas (d perc). She also deploys strings and woodwinds to soften the sound. The program is mostly covers of standards with Skonberg singing more than playing her horn. Guitarist David Rourke shines on “So It Goes”, the sole original. Her rich vocals resonate with the music on “I’m Glad There Is You”. When she does pick up her trumpet, it’s magical and on “Fragile” and “Mood Indigo”.
