O’s Notes: Intersecting Lines is saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi’s latest release featuring strong interplay with fellow saxophonist Dick Oates. It is all original material in contrast to the revamped standards on his prior release. Like the melodies, writing duties are shared between Bergonzi and Oates. Dave Santoro (b) and Andrea Michelutti (d) are also long time associates of Bergonzi and this comes through in their seamless interaction. We enjoyed the harmonies on “Tanzania” and “Itchy”. The lack of a piano gives the brass the freedom to stretch out and indeed they do!
