O’s Notes: Russian bassist Art Ovrutski teams up with a few of New York’s finest jazz musicians in an Intersection that yields a lot of good music. Trombonist Michael Dease, pianist Helio Alves, saxophonist Michael Thomas and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca flesh out an exceptional quintet playing new and classic tunes. Art contributes three originals with one tune each from Dease and Fonseca to go along with three covers by Evans, Shorter and Dorham. Ovrutski makes a bold statement as a leader with pronounced passages on bass that distinguish his work while enhancing the work of the unit. There is an abundance of energy in the music regardless of the tempo that stimulates listeners and begs for an encore.
