O’s Notes: The warm wispy sound of Joe’s tenor sax greets us on the opening title track, a ballad written by Lovano. This sets the tone for the entire session, a collection of classics. Highlights are “Stella By Starlight” and “Early Autumn”. The quartet is Hank Jones (p), George Mraz (b) and Paul Motian (d) with Lovano. They play with a level of sensitivity that fully embellishes the ballads using instrumental tones and timber without vocals.
