O’s Notes: A female jazz vocalist, a jazz trumpeter who also sings, one who creates her own groove and also coaxes a bit more from overworked standards. This is Anna Callahan. A tight rhythm section backs her: Rick Shaw (b), Jamey Tate (d), Greg Gordon (p) and Joe Bagg on the B3. They all get a chance to step up and they all shine. Anna’s voice is gentle with soft scatting on “You’d Be So Nice”; just one example where accompaniment really swings to make you feel it. Anna’s vocal style ranges from blue vocals on “What’ll I Do”, with a funky B3 backdrop to the warmth of “Let’s Get Lost” with her complimentary trumpet solo. This is good listening.
