O’s Notes: We like the direction Roney has been going on his recordings on High Note. Jazz is the third release and it is a continuation of his interpretation of the word. There are strong elements of bebop but they are blended with a modern urban vibe courtesy of DJ Val Jeanty and DJ Axum. But they don’t totally push the groove to acid; it remains true to form swinging on “Vater Time” and “Un Poco Loco”. Wallace also pushes the envelope a bit further with a cool cover of Sly Stone’s “Stand”.
