O’s Notes: The combination of classical music with jazz has been tried on numerous occasions. Composer, Gunther Schuller coined the term “Third Stream” to describe the blend in the late 1950’s. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project performs the three works here to perfection. Audiophiles can stretch their systems to their full potential with this recording. We enjoyed the sound and dynamics but also the jazz improvisation and brilliance of the orchestra for 58+ minutes. At the core of the session Gunther narrates the swinging “Journey Into Jazz” about a classically trained trumpet player finding his way into jazz. The journey is a true depiction of jazz.
