O’s Notes: Women are becoming more prominent on the traditional jazz scene, as players, not just singers. Sharel plays sax and makes a statement on her debut recording, a collection of seven bebop tunes. Trombonist and producer Michael Dease wrote most. They range from the calm spirit of “Just For You”, the warmth of “Lover Man” to the rousing classic cooker, “Cherokee”. Cassity displays her ability to burn and sooth. She’s got a lot of potential and a great start on the New York jazz scene.
