O’s Notes: Trombonist, composer and bandleader Marshall Gilkes wastes no time displaying his prowess on the opener “My Shining Hour”, the lone cover in the session. Not much needs to be said about the accompanying WDR Big Band as their finesse and precision is well documented. Some of the standout solos come from pianist Frank Chastenier on “Vesper”, bassist John Goldsby on “Plant Bassed” and Karolina Strassmayer (also sax) on “End In Sight”. The recording dynamics are exceptional contributing a truly fine performance.
