O’s Notes: Bassist Rob Thorsen leads his band through a rich mix of covers and originals. The music blends traditional jazz with some mild fusion in what we would characterize as modern jazz. The net result is great listening music that is complex with universal appeal. Thorsen excels using pace and dynamics to transform classic pieces. There are cool arrangements of “Giant Steps”, “Little Melonse” and “Smile” with Rob leading the melody. Ben Wendel does a fine job on bassoon on “Cigarones” and on sax elsewhere. The music really swings!
