O’s Notes: David has enjoyed high demand over the last few years following his dedicated album to Ray Charles and the success of the movie “Ray”. Newman claims the depiction of him on the silver screen was greatly exaggerated with the drugs and sex. Never the less, one of the great sax players from Texas is now receiving just due accolades. On Life, dedicated to his late pianist – John Hicks, he plays mostly ballads switching from flute to alto, soprano and tenor saxes. Peter Bernstein (g), Steve Nelson (vibes), David Leonhardt (p), Yoron Israel (d) and John Menegon (b) provide fine support over nine popular tunes featuring Newman.
