O’s Notes: Charles Evans places his baritone sax center stage in a duo performance with pianist Neil Shah. The compositions are well developed and showcase the musician’s talents as well as the tonal character of the instruments. All are originals except “An Die Fliegenden Fische” by Jan Roth. There are times when the improvisation gets deep but it is not offensive. We enjoyed the dynamics and the evolving stories of the first two selections, both with multiple parts spanning over eleven minutes each. It is a live session recorded at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre, PA. There are excellent acoustics and an appreciative audience. If you take the time to engage, you can realize that same satisfaction.
