O’s Notes: This live session was recorded at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club and the excitement of the audience is fully captured. In fact, the musicians feed on it! Pianist Alexander is joined on stage by Hassan Shakur (b), Mark Taylor (d) and Robert Thomas Jr. (hand drums) for nine strong selections. The program combines a few groovin’ standards like “The Work Song” with Monty’s own songs. The liner notes speak of joyful playing and music learned in the trenches. It is all here in an excellent set.
