O’s Notes: Pianist Bob Szajner leads a trio with Ed Pickens (b) and Frank Isola (d) for this live session in Detroit. The venue was the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival. The recording has a bit of hiss but it doesn’t overshadow the power of the band. They open cooking on “For Evans Sake” including a crisp solo by Pickens who swings hard through the changes. We liked the groove of “Prayer Meeting” as did the audience on most of these Szajner compositions. Unless you frequented the club scene in Detroit during this time frame Szajner is not a familiar jazz icon, but on this day he was cooking and fortunately the set was captured on tape, another gem in the Cadence Historical Series.
