O’s Notes: Drummer Paul Motian is one of the most creative jazz musicians on the scene today! He appeared at New York’s Village Vanguard late in 2006 with his trio 2000: Chris Potter (sax) and Larry Grenadier (b) + two. The special guests (+ two) are Musabumi Kikuchi (p) and Mat Manieri (viola) or Greg Osby (sax). The program includes seven songs, mostly Paul’s own compositions with two covers. Motian rearranged “Till We Meet Again” in the spirit of his groove – well-constructed free fusion that encourages ample improvisation from his talented team. There’s magic in the air for the patient listener particularly on “Fiasco”.
