O’s Notes: Steve opens the set with “Soul Eyes” and he immediately captures own interest working his sax melody in and around the rhythms of Matt Clark (p), Karen Horner (b) and Jemal Ramierez (d). These are lesser-known yet VERY polished musicians with nice dossiers. Witness “Equinox” to get the point! It’s a great night at Yoshi’s in Oakland, California, one that was truly worth recording. Steve plays with emotion on standards and especially his own compositions, notably “Deomde”.
