Jazz Maniacs, 2006, CD
Jazz Ruler Type: Fusion
O’s Notes: This live set was recorded in Argentina back in 1977. The trio is Gene Perla (b), Don Atlas (d) and Steve Grossman on sax. “Zula Stomp” is one of the best of the eight tracks. It features an excellent bass solo from Perla. We also liked “Conga Solo”, over ten minutes of dynamic work from Atlas. The groove is fusion with mild Latin beats most prominent on “Vaya Mulatto”. Grossman pushes the envelope on his solos that are packed with energy. All of the musicians are showcased and they also play well as a unit. They still sound contemporary today and much larger than three musicians. Listening will make you wish you were there.
