O’s Notes: Drummer and bandleader Bob Holz released Live in New York & L.A. earlier this year but the music was recorded live in 2016 (New York) and 2018-19 (LA) including a wealth of talented musicians. They open with a stirring version of “All Blues” featuring vocalist Ronnie Leigh. Bassist Ralphe Armstrong, guitarist Chet Catallo and pianist Tom Witkowsky light it up on “Blue Mashed Potatoes”. We also enjoyed ”Georgia On My Mind” and “Blues For C.C.” The action shifts to the west coast for the final two tracks (both originals). Saxophonist Brandon Fields shines on “Jammin’ Man” with a subtle reggae twist before the soulful finale “Riptide”. Holz holds it all together and coaxes the most from his team on a standout recording.
