O’s Notes: This DVD features Sonny live in Denmark. The first 5 tunes have Sonny leading a trio with Nils-Henning ¯rsted (b) and Alan Dawson (d). They open swinging on “There Will Never Be Another You”. It’s 1965 and a young Sonny blazes through the changes effortlessly. The black & white stage is dim but all of the action is captured. The last three songs were from a 1968 TV session again in Denmark. ¯rsted is on bass with Kenny Drew (p) and Tootie Heath (d). Both sets include rousing versions of “St. Thomas”, one of his signature tunes. This is Sonny in peak mid-career form after his period of seclusion.
